The Challenge: Incorporating the Bar into the Hotel’s Aesthetic

In the world of hospitality design, creating bar spaces within hotels is a thrilling challenge. Each project asks a unique set of questions: Is the bar part of the lobby requiring a connection to the overall aesthetic? Or is it in a private area that calls for its own identity separate from the design story? Are we renovating an existing bar, or are we building it from the ground up?

Case Studies: Coconut Grove Courtyard and The Dan

These questions lay the foundation for our design process, dictating how we approach each project. For instance, when designing the bar at the Coconut Grove Courtyard, we focused on creating a space that seamlessly blends with the overall aesthetic of the lobby.

Conversely, for The Dan, located in a private area, we crafted a unique identity that stands apart from the rest of the hotel.

Renovations Vs New Builds: Hilton Polaris and Beaufort Hotel

Renovations, like the one we undertook at Hilton Polaris, pose an exciting challenge of giving an existing bar a fresh, new face that complements the hotel’s aesthetics.

On the other hand, new builds like the Beaufort Hotel provide an opportunity to integrate the bar into the new design from the ground up.

The Essentials of Hotel Bar Design

Designing a successful hotel bar involves a careful consideration of several factors:

    • Budget: The budget dictates whether we’re refacing an existing bar with new finishes, conducting a complete renovation, or constructing a new build from scratch.
    • Location: The bar’s location within the hotel and its surrounding locale, city, community, and neighborhood significantly influence the design.
    • Materials and Finishes: We carefully select materials that can withstand constant use, from high-end custom wood, metal, stone, and tile to fresh coats of paint. The choice of barstools also plays a crucial role, considering the weight, mobility, and fabric used.
    • Lighting: Lighting creates different atmospheres throughout the day and night. Whether we’re working with existing fixtures or customizing lighting, we aim to enhance the bar’s ambiance.
    • Layout and Circulation: We ensure there is adequate space for barstools and circulation around the bar. The placement of Point of Sale (POS) systems and ADA-compliant counters are also considered to make the space accessible and functional for all guests.
    • Configuration: For new builds, we decide whether to float the bar in the middle of the space, place it against a solid wall, or up against windows. We also contemplate the shape of the bar – straight, L-shaped, U-shaped, square, or circular.
    • Equipment: Depending on the project, we either utilize existing bar equipment or partner with a Food and Beverage/Kitchen Consultant for guidance.
    • Convenience: Outlets, USB connections, and purse hooks are included for guest convenience. These elements are integrated well into the design to look intentional rather than added afterthoughts.
    • Comfort: We consider whether to use foot rails on the bar or incorporate them into the barstools. We also think about the finish of the bar, the durability of materials used, and whether barstools should have backs.

Overcoming Unique Challenges

ADA Compliance is a significant consideration. We strive to design spaces that are inclusive and don’t isolate wheelchair users. We also consider unique lockable shelving for display and storage, ensuring they function well during peak usage and look good when closed.

The Reward: Client Satisfaction

“I fall in love with the space every time I pass by” – Joe S.

Designing the perfect bar is a complex process that requires a careful balance of aesthetics, functionality, and comfort. However, the end result – a space that clients fall in love with every time they pass by like Joe S. did with The Dan – makes it all worthwhile.
